Waitrose Bracknell energy centre opened by energy minister 26 September 2012
Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change Greg Barker opened the new energy centre at Waitrose Bracknell this week (Monday 24 September 2012).
The low carbon energy centre – developed by energy services company MITIE – uses sustainable local woodchip to power, heat and cool the Waitrose supermarket, making it almost completely independent of the national grid.
It will also cut the store's carbon emissions by more than 750 tonnes per year and save 69% of grid electricity as well as 84% of its gas consumption.
This is the second renewable energy centre developed as a partnership between MITIE and Waitrose: the first, at Waitrose, East Cowes, came online in March this year.
"In an increasingly volatile energy market, this advanced new energy centre reduces Waitrose's reliance on the grid and provides economic and predictably priced energy," comments Mike Tivey, managing director of MITIE's asset management business.
