Global water, energy and maintenance solutions provider NCH Europe is calling for businesses to help drive down the annual global cost of rust by conducting regular maintenance surveys.

On-site surveys, conducted by experts from NCH Europe’s Maintenance and Partsmaster Sales Platform, highlight ways that businesses can save money on maintenance expenditure.

The global cost of rust totals $2.2 trillion, or £1.45 trillion, each year according to George F Hayes of the World Corrosion Organisation. This figure accounts for between three and four per cent of European Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Due to the slow onset of corrosion and rust, many maintenance engineers miss the risk it poses to equipment and infrastructure until it is too late. In many cases it can go unnoticed due to a phenomenon known as creeping normality, which states that if something changes gradually it is often considered acceptable until it begins to cause problems.

“Identifying the onset of rust and corrosion often needs a fresh set of eyes,” said Peter Crossen, VP of the Maintenance and Partsmaster Innovation Platform at NCH Europe. “Calling in an external team to inspect the site means that not only can any problem areas be identified and dealt with accordingly, but that maintenance engineers can be equipped with the knowledge and solutions to keep rust at bay in the long term.”

To combat the creeping normality of rust, NCH Europe offers a free on-site survey for businesses. NCH representatives inspect sites for problem areas and early signs of corrosion, allowing them to advise a course of action and recommend a bespoke rust removal solution that will meet individual short and long-term requirements.

Specialists from NCH Europe can recommend a multi-stage process to either remove the rust or encapsulate it to form a protective layer against future rust development and build up. The type of surface determines the best course of treatment, with small components benefitting from a rust removal dip while metal infrastructure in the construction industry requires a gel solution for rust removal or an encapsulating paint.
