KDC Group wins £1.4 million Viridor contract 11 June 2013

Demolition, decommissioning and remediation firm KDC has won a £1.4 million contract with Viridor, the recycling, renewable energy and waste management firm.

KDC worked with Viridor's international environmental consultant SLR Consulting on the deal, which will see the organisation completing site work at a former 1960s carbon black manufacturing plant in Avonmouth, near Bristol.

KDC process business director Will Simpson will undertake the removal of hazardous products and materials including asbestos, heavy fuel oil, tanks, carbon black, plant equipment, redundant plant structures and foundations at the former Sevalco site. It will also handle remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater during the 40 week project, which will involve a team of 25 KDC staff, working at the ecologically sensitive, 10 hectare site, near the coast.

"We won the project because we demonstrated an excellent understanding of the environmental challenges involved in carrying out decontamination and demolition above and below ground," states Simpson.

"We're helping Viridor remove a contaminated eyesore and rejuvenate the site into an environmentally sound one," he continues. "We will be using our specialist skills to regenerate this site, create local employment and support the community."

"We awarded this complex demolition and remediation project to KDC, because of their expertise, integrated services and highly skilled project team," comments Mike Denman, project manager at Viridor.

"This green scheme will see us developing a new waste-to-energy plant on a former industrial site which will be a boost for the local economy."
