Superwool improves diverter damper insulation 06 January 2014

Converting insulation from stone wool to Superwool Plus has yielded good labour and fixture savings, according to Danish diverters and dampers manufacturer Esscano Power.

The firm also says that it was cost neutral, because although mineral wool is cheaper, installation costs are higher than those for Morgan Ceramic Materials' Superwool Plus blanket.

Further, as well as lower installation costs, due to the speed of installation, the new blanket material is easier to handle, resulting in lower wastage, says the firm.

Additionally, since it has a much better temperature performance, Superwool Plus blanket can be installed with a reduced total insulation thickness, while also offering greater security in case of any major temperature overruns.

Elaine Hughes, regional business development officer for Morgan Advanced Materials, says she recommended 50mm thickness and 128kg density Superwool Plus for this application.

"Our Superwool Plus blanket ticked all the important technical boxes for the project," states Hughes, indicating that thermal conductivity, shrinkage and temperature capability were all good, and that the material also offered an improved fixing pattern.

Superwool Plus low bio-persistent insulating fibre products are 17% more energy efficient than traditional RCF (refractory ceramic fibre) and other AES (alkaline earth silicate) insulations.

They were designed for furnace linings in the iron and steel and aluminium industries, as well as others requiring high-temperature processing – with a classification of 1200°C.

Hughes says that a breakthrough in Morgan Ceramic Materials advanced manufacturing control has allowed the product to be engineered to maximise the fibre content. As a result, it has up to 20% lower thermal conductivity than competitive insulations, she says.
