Yokogawa reflects on online plant control simulator 21 February 2014

Plant management systems giant Yokogawa is to offer an online simulator for optimising plant automation operations in the oil and gas, petrochemical and other industries.

Dubbed Mirror Plant, and jointly developed with subsidiary Omega Simulation, the system will be available as part of Yokogawa's VigilantPlant Services suite, claimed to support safe, stable and efficient plant operations.

According to the company, the Mirror Plant simulator is designed to visualise the internal state of a plant process and make near-term predictions on future plant behaviour.

It operates synchronously with the main plant control system and is Yokogawa's answer to the growing call to improve large-scale plant safety in line with strengthening competitiveness by making plants more efficient.

A field test of Mirror Plant, conducted from 2011 to 2013 at one of Mitsui Chemicals' plants, demonstrated that the system efficiently stabilised and optimised the operation of a distillation tower.

As a result, Mirror Plant won the Technology Award from the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE), which commended this innovative technology for boosting plant productivity and safety.
