The UK government has confirmed plans to build a prototype fusion energy plant at the West Burton power station site in Nottinghamshire by 2040.

Fusion is said to be based on the same physical reactions that power the sun and stars, and is the process by which two light atomic nuclei combine while releasing large amounts of energy. This technology is expected to have the potential to deliver safe, sustainable, low carbon energy.

The plant is part of STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production), a programme that the government has provided £200 million for the first phase. As part of the project, the UK Atomic Energy Authority is to produce a concept design by 2024.

The programme will commit to the development of apprenticeship schemes in the region.
