Thames Water confirms EZstrip progressing cavity pump claims 05 August 2010

Thames Water has joined the growing number of UK utilities installing the new EZstrip maintain-in-place progressing cavity pump, from NOV Mono – in this case to improve efficiency and reduce downtime at its sewage treatment works in Dorking.

The plant's previous conventional equipment, which transferred sludge from its primary settlement tank into a picket fence thickener, was failing and causing worrying plant downtime.

Gavin Parker, sewage works operator at Thames Water, explains that it was taking around two and a half days to disassemble the old pump, de-rag and reassemble, install and test it.

"We specified the Mono EZstrip sewage pump, because we were keen to try out the company's latest innovation for ourselves, and I have to say, it has definitely delivered. Maintenance and downtime at the works have been significantly reduced," he says. "Also, because the pump requires no dismantling space, it was easily installed into the same space as the existing pump, with room to spare."

In fact, Mono says its EZstrip sewage pump can be stripped down and maintained in just 30 minutes – a feat it believes justifies the claim that it is the biggest leap forward in progressing cavity pump design in 30 years.

In brief detail, the chamber of the pump has a two-piece design that can be opened in less than one minute, the suction chamber and rotating parts de-ragged and the chamber reassembled with a spanner and an allen key. That whole operation takes less than two and a half minutes.

The model range has a capacity of up to 165m3/h and 12bar pressure, and is available in either cast iron or stainless steel, with a choice of rotor and stator materials, including WRAS compliant elastomers and a pre-assembled drive train.
