Shanks AD waste processing plant up and running 01 December 2014

Shanks Waste Management anaerobic digestion (AD) plant, located on the Westcott Venture Park in Buckinghamshire, has been completed.

Lorien Engineering Solutions was by project lead for the facility, covering mechanical, process and electrical engineering al he way from approval of plant and instrument control specifications to procurement, installation and commissioning.

The plant, which is capable of processing 48,000 tonnes of waste food per year, has been designed to export 3.2mW of renewable electricity.

The process begins with food waste being separated from packaging, before being transported to a digester, where it is broken down by micro-organisms under anaerobic conditions, generating biogas and digestate.

The digestate is conditioned before being used to fertilise land, while biogas is cleaned and burned to produce renewable electricity.

"We chose Lorien because of the high calibre and flexibility of the engineers they proposed for this demanding project," comments head of process design and engineering at Shanks Waste Management, Ray Nattrass.

"We also had access to their office-based staff when additional support was required. They were an integral part of the delivery team and key to ensuring the facility met our technical standards."
