Selex Galileo turns to aqueous cleaning plant 11 July 2011

Defence electronic systems manufacturer Selex Galileo says it has improved its UK operational and environmental performance, with the installation of an aqueous component cleaning station.

The firm recently commissioned a MecWash Systems Midi system at its Basildon plant, which is a centre for precision components also used at its Luton, Edinburgh and Portsmouth sites, as well as parent Finmeccanica's plants in Italy.

Mel South, manufacturing manager at Selex Galileo, explains that the new wash system is to the company's commitment to operating a machining centre of excellence.

Following production and machining, components are now processed by the MecWash Midi facility before being despatched for assembly or further manufacturing processes, he says.

"The wide range of components – mostly aluminium – that we manufacture in the UK call for the cleaning facility to be highly versatile," states South.

"A range of stainless steel baskets with nylon dividers, nylon baskets or dedicated fixtures measuring up to half a metre in length can all be accommodated. Importantly, the single unit is able to provide high quality cleaning on both standard components and also highly complex, thin wall, investment castings."

South also says that the volume of solvents, previously used across the company's UK manufacturing processes, have now been reduced in line with statutory requirements, while the quality of the cleaning process is still "of the highest order".
