Qinetiq launches next generation energy-from-waste plant 19 December 2011

QinetiQ has launched what it describes as a revolutionary energy-from-waste plant that uses scalable, next generation technology to consume waste and process it to produce a clean, renewable source of energy.

According to Sanjay Razdan, managing director of QinetiQ's new technology business, each unit plant should provide enough electricity for up to 50 homes, or heat for up to 300.

"QinetiQ understands waste management challenges and we believe the market is ready for small scale energy-from-waste solutions," states Razdan.

"After eight years of research and delivery, we have built on our waste disposal systems that are currently in service with the Royal Navy to develop the next generation."

Apart from the clear value of transforming some of the UK's 288 million tonnes of annual waste production renewably into energy, QinetiQ's decentralised approach also means reduced landfill transportation costs, since energy is produced close to source.
