Hinckley STW gets ECS health and safety treatment 08 August 2014

ECS Engineering Services has been contracted to replace or extend all hand railing, barriers and access steelwork at Severn Trent Water's Hinckley sewage treatment works, in Leicestershire.

Andy Swindells, project manager, explains that a site assessment led to the proposal to replace existing barriers, and install new protective steelwork in areas where previously there had been none, to bring the site up to date with current regulations.

"Previously, some of the hand railing required work to meet current regulations, while some areas required new barriers to be installed to provide additional protection to personnel on site," comments Swindells.

"We developed a detailed method statement and risk assessment for the project, because we knew our engineers would be removing an existing safety barrier before installing the new hand railing," he continues.

"This meant that extra care must be taken throughout the project to ensure that we maintained our excellent safety record."

Part of the project will inclujde ECS installing new hand railing on four primary settlement tanks, which will involve bending the pipework to suit the 24m diameter tanks.

In addition, the engineers will be installing access steelwork and a viewing platform to allow site operators improved access to plant assets.
