Dual PID controllers power ABB variable speed drives 26 May 2015

ABB’s latest variable speed drives now feature two independent PID (proportional integral derivative) loop controllers, making it easier and cheaper to harness drive power for process control.

The industrial automation giant says that, instead of controlling motor speed alone, a drive could now be used to run at a speed necessary to maintain any plant variable setpoint – whether pressure, flow, temperature, height, thickness or strain.

It also means no need for an external PID controller or PLC – and, because the loops can be used in cascade mode, projects such as driving the motor to maintain a level while also managing a flow controller linked to control valve are simplified.
