Clamp on flowmeters guide energy efficiency choices for NHS 13 August 2012

Managers at an unnamed hospital serving more than 270,000 people in Bedfordshire have successfully harnessed clamp-on flowmeters to guide energy savings on hot water, according to ETA Energy Systems.

Peter Richardson, ETA's managing director, explains that engineers wanted to understand consumption in order to identify requirements and hence the most energy-efficient replacement equipment.

They called in ETA, he says, to examine pumps, flow rates and valve balancing of the existing system.

"Having considered various measurement alternatives, two Micronics PF330 meters were selected, due to the ease of installation, and maintenance and service benefits delivered by this non-contact technology," states Richardson.

He makes the point that these portable devices – which are used for clean liquid monitoring and have an integral logger – lead to far less disruption than the alternative of using in-line meters.

The meters were installed at several locations for the trial period to determine best fit for the new plant, with engineers able to monitor flow rates and calculate energy and hence also cost and carbon footprint.
