Plants offered £7,000 savings every year from air audits 07 September 2010

Numerous firms are saving around £7,000 per year, simply by taking advantage of a leak reduction programme, using Thorite's compressed air audits and surveys service.

According to the company, few plant engineers and managers realise that a single 3mm diameter compressed air leak can cost up to £600 per year. It also suggests that leakage is the single largest waste of compressed air, with up to 40% on unmanaged systems being commonplace.

Thorite advises that its engineers can carry out a compressed air audit, or simply an air leak reduction survey, using ultrasonic leak detectors – leading to a report that locates each leak, classified by amount and cost.

Payback, says the firm, "is usually achieved in a few months". It gives the example of a West Yorkshire wire drawing business that was wasting £7,900 each year through air leakage. Thorite's repair cost was £1,900 and that was paid for through savings in just four months – with a £7,900 saving each year thereafter.
