New Carrington Power plant ships in boiler and turbines 06 January 2014

Construction of Carrington Power Station, in Partington, is ramping up with various elements of the boiler now arriving on barges, via the Manchester Ship Canal, to minimise truck movements on local roads.

"We're expecting the gas turbines for the power station in the near future, and we'll also be bringing them in by barge," comments Jonathan Smith, head of media relations at Alstom, which was awarded a contract to supply the electromechanical equipment for the new plant.

Alstom is responsible for installation and maintenance of the equipment – two GT26 gas turbines, the steam turbine, heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and turbogenerator etc – at Carrington Power's new 880MW gas-fired power station.

DF is responsible for construction and site management of the power plant – which is located on the site of the old Carrington power station in Trafford, next to the Manchester Shipping Canal and the River Mersey – under an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract.

Scheduled for completion in 2016, the power station will provide enough power for around a million homes.
