National Apprenticeship Week 2019: Ryan Green04 March 2019

National Apprenticeship Week, 4-8 March, shines a light on future technicians and engineers, and the courses, teachers and employers that prepare them for success. Ryan Green is a mechanical senior apprentice at SPIE UK.

I have been working with SPIE for nearly 3 years. I have been studying pipefitting HVAS for 2 years and now I have moved on to study welding.

I wanted to learn a trade. When a close friend who worked at the company told me about the opportunity it sounded really interesting and when I looked SPIE up online, I wanted to find out more. I looked into all of the roles and job positions in the company and decided that I should apply to be a Mechanical Apprentice to then become a Skilled Mechanic.

Since joining SPIE in 2016 I have gained a good amount of skills and qualifications. I have completed 2 years at college earning a level 2 qualified pipe fitting certificate. I’m currently in my third year of my apprenticeship studying welding. By 2020 I will have fully qualified as a pipefitter welder.

I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to others as there are so many good opportunities to progress in the role you choose. I have also gained a huge range and quality of knowledge from the men and women on the sites who are willing to teach a keen learner. I also believe that apprenticeships are the way forward – by combining learning and working together I think I have achieved far more than I ever would have through study alone.

In the near future I would like to progress through SPIE and to further my career in welding and work my way up to be a foreman. From there I would like to build up my knowledge and gain experience to becoming a supervisor. I would also like to get a more in-depth knowledge of welding.
