High efficiency motors specified for €21.5m Spanish water plant 20 November 2012

High efficiency motors are delivering energy savings on 100 pumps and blowers – some up to 160kW – at a major new wastewater treatment plant, commissioned by Spanish water firm Canal de Isabel II.

The €21.5 million EDAR Arroyo Quiñones sewage treatment facility, designed and implemented by project engineer Grupo Sacyr y Vallehermoso, is using WEG W22 motors.

Started in November 2009 and now nearing completion, the plant has a capacity of 45,705.60 m3/day, and serves 172,500 in San Sebastian de los Reyes, near Madrid.

WEG motors are driving four 160kW blowers for the digesters, three 15kW blowers, four sludge recirculation pump motors (also 15kW), supplied by Sterling Fluid, as well as smaller motors for the balance of the plant.

"We are obviously delighted that our high efficiency motors have been chosen for such a prestigious project," comments Javier de la Morena, from WEG Spain.

"The W22 motors have been supplied as part of OEM packages involving both pumps and blowers. They are used as standard fitment, because of their ability not only to deliver high levels of energy saving, but also reliability in what is a critical continuous process environment."

De la Morena explains that the new motors deliver efficiencies above the minimum values specified in IEC 60034-30, the new harmonised IE (International Efficiency) grading standard for three-phase cage induction motors.

A key factor, he says, is the W22's new aerodynamic frame, which increases airflow and reduces operational temperatures.

"Today, electric motors account for as much as 65% of industry's energy usage," states de la Morena. "Yet a huge amount of this energy is wasted, as organisations use solutions that are poorly designed, or inappropriate for their applications.

"By reducing this wastage with high efficiency motors, companies not only meet their environmental responsibilities, but also cut their costs and improve their profitability."
