Gas power generators take on high electricity tariffs 31 March 2010

UK plants suffering the high costs of fixed energy tariffs levied from September 2008, could be cutting their bills in half and improving flexibility of supply.

So says temporary power and temperature control specialist Aggreko, which suggests gas powered generators are a seriously useful answer.

Sites that use at least 1 MW of continuous power, have access to an industrial scale gas supply and are paying more than 6p/kWhr for their electricity, could be saving of up to 50% on their fixed tariff, advises Jeff Short, sales manager at Aggreko.

The company, he says, is in advanced discussions with several plants, including food processors, steelworks and quarries.

He also points to the additional energy value of heat generated by Aggreko's natural gas powered units, in producing hot water for CHP (combined heat and power).

"A number of high volume energy users were caught out in September 2008, by signing up for fixed rate electricity contracts, some of which are as high as 12p/kWhr," says Short.

"These users urgently need to explore alternative power sources, as the savings could amount to many hundreds of thousands of pounds per year."
