Better alarm handling as EEMUA unveils new guidelines 16 September 2013

EEMUA (Engineering Equipment and Materials Users' Association) has launched the Third Edition of EEMUA 191 'Alarm systems: a guide to design, management and procurement'.

The 2013 Edition, which is endorsed by the HSE, provides revised guidance on designing, managing and procuring effective alarm systems, with new chapters on HCI management techniques and alarm configuration.

Also, new appendices cover: alarm suppression; geographically distributed processes; intelligent fault detection; requirements for alarms; and supporting checklists.

According to EEMUA chief executive Clive Tayler, following the new guidance should result in better alarm systems that are more usable and underpin safer and more cost-effective industrial operations.

"A particular strength of EEMUA 191 is that it was developed by the users of alarm systems in industry," comments Tayler.

"The first and second editions of EEMUA 191 have sold thousands of copies worldwide, formed the basis of training courses internationally and led to the production of related publications, such as EEMUA 201, dealing with human-machine interfaces," he adds.

The new publication is aimed at anyone about to embark on, or currently undertaking, an alarm rationalisation process or any other alarm management project.

Copies of EEMUA 191 Edition 3 are available for £129 from EEMUA.
