ABB wins $20 million drives order in South Korea 12 August 2011

ABB has won an order from Hyundai Steel Corporation to supply the drive system for an extension to its heavy plate mill in the Chungnam province of South Korea.

The integrated mill produces high-quality automotive and shipbuilding steel plates, and the expansion will increase production capacityfrom 1.5 million tons per year to 2 million tons.

Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB's process automation division, says that the drives will help the mill reduce its energy consumption, increase its production throughput while maintaining precise material specifications and quality.

Scope of supply includes a drive system with low- and medium-voltage drives that use direct torque control (DTC), motors and associated electrical equipment.

Reinikkala says the new equipment will maximise productivity and equipment reliability in the plate mill, as well as optimising energy use.

ABB will also provide project engineering, supervision, commissioning, training and general support services.

The expanded plant is scheduled to start operation at the end of 2013.
