Vince Cable backs MAS’ English manufacturing SMEs showcase 01 October 2013

A lightweight hovercraft, an Olympic torch and the electric powered three-wheeled Raptor were some of the manufacturing innovations that greeted Business Secretary Vince Cable on Monday (30 September 2013).

Dr Cable was given a guided tour of the Manufacturing Advisory Service's showcase of SME manufacturing excellence, currently on display at DBIS (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills) Victoria Street headquarters in London.

The Business Secretary used the exhibition to praise the role SME manufacturers are playing in the UK' economic recovery, with this vital and often overlooked segment of the industry making up more than 95% of England's manufacturing businesses and employing 1.1 million people.

"We are rightly proud of the manufacturing talent we have in this country, but larger household names are just part of the success story," stated the Business Secretary.

"There are more than 110,000 SMEs, who are investing in developing new products and technologies that will be used across the world. This showcase gives visitors a firsthand glimpse of some great British success stories," he continued.

"The government wants to make the UK the best place to start and grow a business. With the support of MAS, SMEs are overcoming challenges and identifying new opportunities, leading to increased sales and the creation of new jobs," added Cable.

In the 12 months, MAS has worked with 12,000 firms in England, helping deliver a forecast additional £620m of GVA to the economy. MAS believes this support will safeguard and create some 27,000 jobs.

The Showcase is open from 9am to 5.30pm until 4 October 2013. For further information, go to the link below.
