Veolia wins three major MBBR water treatment contracts 05 December 2012

Three water companies have adopted advanced MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) technology from Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, based on technology developed subsidiary AnoxKaldnes in the late 1980s.

At Anglian Water's Corby WwTW, the circular concrete MBBR unit will be used to increase capacity, treating domestic wastewater and industrial effluent. The MBBR process provides the ability to cope with fluctuating industrial loads, while producing a consistently high quality final effluent.

A new MBBR is also being installed by Yorkshire Water at Cudworth WwTW, near Barnsley, for tertiary nitrification. Here the media will be in a multi-celled rectangular concrete unit followed by Veolia's Hydrotech Discfilters to ensure that a tight BOD discharge consent is achieved.

Also, as part of Dwr Cymru's multi-million pound upgrade at Swansea Bay STWs, MBBR technology will again provide for additional capacity while also meeting a tighter discharge consent to protect the waters of Swansea Bay.

Based on fixed-film technology, the key to Veolia's MBBR is the suspended carrier media, now with the firm's ANOX-K5 media, said to deliver significant benefits for new and upgraded wastewater treatment plants.
