Veolia designs 1.5MWe CHP plant for Crisp Malting 09 October 2014

Crisp Malting Group's Great Ryburgh plant is replacing two ageing 600kWe Cogenco CHP (combined heat and power) units with a single 1.5MWe CHP system, under a turnkey design, supply, installation and maintenance contract with Veolia.

Steve Surridge, chief engineer at the privately-owned malting firm's plant, in Fakenham, Norfolk, explains that its existing Cogenco units have been operating for 15 years and are now at the end of their operational lives.

The new unit – being supplied by Veolia's specialist packaged CHP division Cogenco – will supply electricity and heat to the malting facility, with a hot water-to-air heat exchanger delivering hot air to the malt kilns.

"The unit will supply heat to two kilns – we alternate the kilns so one is running every other day," explains Surridge, adding that the facility is ideal for CHP, because its massive heat load is matched by a large electrical load running the fans and conveyor systems for malt production.

"The main challenge for us is to reconfigure the plant for one single CHP unit instead of the two units that supply the M&E systems currently," explains Cogenco's project manager Tom Gibson.

Cogenco will also modify the site's electrical transformers and heat exchanger connections. The division will then cover operation and maintenance of the units, with remote monitoring from its Horsham base.

The new CHP unit is expected to reduce energy costs and save 2,386 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Work started on site in August and will be completed before the end of the year.
