Vapour and gas permeability compromise pump and valve performance 23 August 2013

Pump, meter and flow valve manufacturers and users are being reminded that while all are built using materials that are good at containing liquids, some are more permeable than others to vapours and gasses.

The warning comes from Versaperm, which makes the point that EVOH, PVOH and cellulose and many other materials fall into this can cause problems, while manufacturing processes such as thermoforming can also degrade pump and valve performance "to a quarter of its original value".

Versaperm is now offering equipment that it says is capable of measuring permeability not only of material samples, but also components and finished products.

Vapours and gases covered include water vapour, hydrocarbons, oxygen, nitrogen, CO2 "and most other gases or vapours".

The new equipment is fast and easy to use, it says, and accuracies are commonly in the parts per million range, even parts per billion, range with some gasses.

Its system has been designed for use on pumps, metres and flow valves, as well as plastics or rubber materials, containers, films, coatings and components.
