Take care when selecting respirators, warns Arco 21 April 2010

Arco, one of the largest personal protective equipment firms in the UK, is urging plant engineers to ensure that they have adequate respiratory protection by supporting the 'Clean Air? Take Care!' campaign,

A joint initiative between the BSIF (British Safety Industry Federation) and HSE (Health and Safety Executive), the campaign aims to help reduce occupational respiratory disease, caused by poor choice of respiratory protection in the workplace.

According to Paul Ness, divisional director of safety equipment at Arco, approximately 5.5 million workers are exposed to respiratory hazards in the workplace.

What's more, he says that recent research by both the BSIF and HSE has highlighted concerns that respiratory protective equipment (RPE)is not being effectively selected, used and maintained in a significant proportion of workplaces where a respiratory hazard exists, leaving engineers and technicians at risk.

"Ill-fitting or inadequate respiratory protection can put workers health at risk," warns Ness. "We provide a full range of respiratory solutions to help ensure workers are fully protected and our team of experts can help customers select what is best for their business."

'Clean Air? Take Care!' was launched in March and has support from other industry stakeholders including IOSH, IOM, Safety Groups UK, BOHS, IIRSM and TUC.
