Sustainable paper maker turns to Regal for motor experience 26 September 2013

Paper producer Double A – which is championing sustainable feedstock, with trees farmed in a programme called Paper from KHAN-NA, harnessing unused agricultural land – is reporting success with using motor maker Regal to coordinate the supply of electric motors for its latest paper mill.

It also reveals that Regal hs been helping the company to develop turnkey projects expertise in its own engineering team in Thailand, taking the concept of integrated motor supply a stage further than usual.

Regal and its dedicated large motor operation Marathon Electric supplied more than 200 high-, medium- and low-voltage motors for the project, each involving individual attention in terms of engineering and commissioning.

Regal explains that it was required to engineer some motors for very high starting torques, because they were to be used with high-powered vacuum blowers, while others had to be equipped to accelerate and decelerate very smoothly, for winding and unwinding fragile, newly made paper.

All motors also had to meet set standards for energy efficiency, noise emissions, electrical safety etc, and had to demonstrate reliability for use in humid and remote locations.

A Double A spokesperson reports that Regal's project management worked well, with delivery of motors matched to the individual OEMs building the range of plant machines.

It cites, for example: the vacuum blowers, made by Mann International, in Germany; pumps sourced from Sulzer Pumps, in Switzerland, and Andritz Pumps of Germany; and sectional drives built by PMT, in Italy.

More motors were also despatched to Thailand, China and Fiji, where other machinery for the mill was manufactured.

Marathon also sent commissioning engineers to the OEMs in the first stage of the project, and then later to Thailand to the new mill for installation and commissioning.
