Surprise bio developments01 November 2009

Prominent at this year's British Invention Show were sustainable bio-production processes.

Professor Azizah Ahmad, for example, from the University Teknologi Mara, in Selangor, demonstrated a coating made from the gum of dammar trees, which, when mixed with nano-clay and silicone, becomes a coating for steel that is not only low cost but scratch resistant.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Haris Kamarudin, from the same university, showed board made from eggshells and polystyrene, that is much stronger than gypsum or plaster, half the price and a better thermal insulator.
