Siemens takes engineering automation portal to the next level 08 January 2013

Siemens Industry has extended the range of its Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) Portal engineering framework for control and automation systems development.

Version 12 integrates all Sinamics G drives, also from Siemens, while adding further diagnostic functions and extended safety for Siemens Simatic S7-1500 and the Profinet communications.

Siemens business manager for automation Simon Keogh says the new TIA Protal programming languages also provide even greater efficiency and cyber security, as well as superior copy and access. And he explains that there are also engineering tool updates covering configuration, programming, commissioning and servicing of Siemens automation and drive systems.

"Version 12 provides users with further benefits designed to increase productivity and flexibility," he enthuses.

"And commissioning time is enhanced and maintenance strategies supported, reducing downtime and improving operational efficiencies," he adds.

For Siemens, TIA Portal is all about enabling engineering and operational users to perform automation and drive tasks quickly and intuitively in a single overarching environment – and Keogh suggests that it is suitable for both first-time and experienced users.

Most important, it offers a standardised operating concept for controllers, HMIs and drives, as well as shared data storage and automatic data consistency, during configuration, communication and diagnosis. It also now offers very wide ranging libraries covering automation software objects.

"Version 12 of the TIA Portal is the next stage of ongoing development for an engineering framework that helps users perform automation and drive tasks quickly and intuitively," states Keogh.

"We believe the broad range of enhancements that are central to Version 12 will prove highly beneficial and help drive efficiency objectives."
