Sellafield Silos Direct Encapsulation: preferred bidder is AMA15 April 2014

Joint venture AMA has been selected as the preferred bidder for Sellafield's Silos Direct Encapsulation (SDP) project.

AMA was created specifically to compete for this contract and consists of the French company Areva and British companies Mace and Atkins.

When complete, SDP will process nuclear waste recovered from the Magnox Swaf Storage Silo, one of the oldest nuclear waste silos on the Sellafield site.

The new plant will then package it to make it ready for long-term storage. It is the only project of its kind in the world.

Sellafield Ltd's primary focus is to safely clean up and decommission all high hazard facilities on the site. Successful completion of the SDP project will be a significant step forward.

"The market recognised the challenges presented by this important and complex project and two strong joint venture organisations emerged to tender for the contract," comments Scott Reeder, Sellafield chief projects officer.

"Sellafield was very pleased with the quality, capability and commitment offered by each of these organisations."
