New tilting weir helps Somerset flood defences 09 March 2015

The Environment Agency is reporting improved flood defence on a recently completed 4km stretch of the River Parrett in the Somerset Levels, in the area around Stathe and Combe, thanks in part to a new tilting weir.

ECS Engineering Services supplied and installed the equipment, which has also been assessed as more reliable than the legacy equipment it replaces.

The Environment Agency construction project – delivered by Black & Veatch, working with Interserve – aimed to raise some sections of riverbank, to strengthen weak spots, and to repair sections that had suffered from scouring.

Interserve approached ECS to develop, manufacture and install the new tilting weir, which has been designed to improve the water level control in the drainage system itself.

Timing of the project was crucial since construction engineers from Interserve were providing temporary dams either side of the installation site – with a bypass pipe to ensure that water flow could be maintained.

ECS delivered and installed the tilting weir, as well as installing the hand-railing, in a site classed as a confined space due to the risk of water entering the area, as well as the potential for harmful gases from the river bed.

Working with the appropriate precautions and equipment, ECS engineers completed the installation in two days.
