MasoSine pump halves Purity’s drum emptying time26 September 2011

West Midlands-based Purity Soft Drinks is reporting excellent results, since replacing air operated diaphragm pumps with MasoSine SPS process pumps from Watson-Marlow Pumps Group.

Purity production director Stuart Nalley states the move has cut the time taken to unload barrels of juice concentrate by a factor of 10, with the operation now taking just two minutes.

He explains that juice concentrate can arrive at the company's manufacturing plant in quantities upward of 200 barrels, and that, until recently, air operated diaphragm (AOD) pumps were used for decanting – causing a significant production bottleneck.

Having used another Watson-Marlow Bredel high pressure peristaltic hose pumps in the past, Purity approached the company for a solution to its decanting problem. And hence this improvement, aided in large part by the sine pump's suction lift capability – which is also helping Purity to pump up a thick prune juice concentrate for a new product – and its sinusoidal rotor for gentle, low shear product handling.

"There's no doubt that sine pump technology has reduced our make-up time and allowed greater production time," comments Nalley.

"Furthermore, the ability to vary the speed via an inverter, to match it to the product being handled, is of great benefit and allows us to pump concentrate ranging from semi-frozen juices to thick purees."
