Leek Adams Foods plant boosts green performance 22 February 2011

Dairy products company Adams Foods is achieving impressive carbon performance at its new factory in Staffordshire, thanks to a CHP (combined heat and power) plant.

The 150kW CHP unit, supplied by Ener-G, is part of an environmental management programme at the site. Since commissioning in the summer of last year, it has achieved carbon savings of 476 tonnes.

The factory and office complex, in Leek, was designed to be the most efficient and environmentally friendly cheese packing facility in Europe.

Apart from the 150kW of electricity, the Ener-G CHP system provides 225kW of heat to pre-heat water for washing and cleaning. It was acquired using Ener-G's capital purchase scheme and includes an Ener-G premier maintenance contract.

Adams Foods also implemented several other energy-saving techniques, including sun pipes, passive infrared lighting controls, photovoltaic cells and free cooling to the production hall, using roof mounted air fans and inverter driven motors on pumps and fans.
