Industrial sensor energy harvesting to get feasibility funding 04 September 2012

Industrial companies are being encouraged to bid for a share of up to £1m of government investment in feasibility studies into energy harvesting technologies for autonomous sensing.

The grant funding – from the UK's Technology Strategy Board (TSB) – will enable the selected firms to explore the opportunities created by extending the life of batteries (or removing them) in electronic sensor and transmitters on industrial plant.

The TSB cites applications in process, condition and environmental monitoring, in sectors such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace and subsea, as well as other harsh environments.

Feasibility and demonstration projects, it says, must be undertaken by a consortium of at least two partners (one of which can be an academic institution) and the project must be led by a business.

Projects are expected to last six to 18 months and grant funding of up to 75% will be available, with a maximum of £100,000 for each project.

The competition opens on 8 October 2012 and applicants must register their interest by 28 November. Deadline for the receipt of applications is 5 December 2012.

A briefing day for applicants will be held on 23 October.
