Heating upgrade to save Manchester Convention Centre £100,000 a year 28 October 2013

New electric motors and drives have not only improved the Manchester Central Convention Centre's energy efficiency to the tune of £100,00 per year, but also reduced massively reduced this exhibition centre's carbon footprint.

MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) specialist Brammer initiated the removal of 12 existing two-speed DOL (direct on line) controlled IE1 efficiency electric motors and v-belt drives from acoustic cabinets to an area outside the building.

These were then replaced with WEG IE3 15kW and 55kW motors and WEG variable speed drives, complete with Gates poly chain drives to supply extractor fans.

"Initially, tests were carried out to compare the running costs of the existing system with the proposed new system," explains Chris Platt of Brammer.

"Both systems were run for 2,000 hours at high speed and 2,000 hours at low speed and the running costs were evaluated," he continues.

"The results were indisputable, with impressive savings to be made with the more efficient upgraded system. Consequently, we were given the go-ahead to arrange supply and installation of the new motors and transmissions."

A Manchester Central Convention Centre spokesperson says that apart from the significant financial savings, the new system will result in estimated carbon savings of more than 600 tonnes a year.
