EU MEPS extended from 1 January 2015: more efficiencies available 27 November 2014

On 1 January 2015, EU MEPS (the European minimum efficiency performance standard) comes into force, and all 7.5—375kW motors bought in Europe must meet IE3 efficiency levels, or IE2, but only if fitted with a variable speed drive (VSD).

Automation giant ABB is reminding engineers that IE2 motors do not have to be decommissioned and replaced, as the ruling is not retrospective.

Also, users' stocks of IE2 motors can still be used after the deadline. However, any new IE2 motors for any application – existing or new – will require a VSD.

That said, ABB business unit manager, motors and generators Dave Hawley advises that using VSDs will not only mean EU MEPS compliance, but also deliver more accurate and reliable motor control and improved production in many cases.

"While the energy saving benefits of VSDs are well documented, the productivity improvements that can be achieved by many other less publicised features are not common," states Hawley.

He also points to pre-installed VSD macros for applications such as pumps and fans, which ease setup, as well as wiring error protection to assist with commissioning, and intelligent control panels for simplified operator interaction.

For engineers wanting to assess energy-saving opportunities, following introduction of the new efficiency standard, ABB has launched an App that shows energy, CO2 and money saved, as well as an estimated return on investment, specifically from implementing VSDs instead of DOL (direct-on-line) starting.

The App will be available for download next month (December 2014) via the Apple App Store.

Hawley says users select their industry and application (pump or fan, for example), plus the energy cost, motor rating, voltage and operating hours. The App then delivers an instant mini-report, including details of a suitable matched ABB motor-drive package.

A full quotation and engineer's report can then be requested, and installation and commissioning of the recommended products arranged via ABB's AVP (added value partner) resellers.

Incidentally, up-to-date manuals, catalogues and brochures for ABB's drives, motors and auxiliary equipment range will also be accessible on the App.
