Doosan receives the safety sword award 04 December 2013

Doosan Babcock and Doosan Škoda Power have together won the Sword of Honour from the British Safety Council.

The award was presented to parent company Doosan Power System, one of only 68 organisations worldwide to receive a Sword of Honour for excellence in the management of health and safety.

With around 6,000 employees involved in the design, production, installation and service of boiler, air pollution control systems and turbo generators for the thermal, nuclear and renewable energy sectors, Doosan Babcock and Doosan Škoda Power are big names in products and services for power generation.

Simon Hopkins, Doosan Babcock's head of health, safety and environment, explains that to compete for the Sword of Honour, Doosan first had to achieve the maximum five stars in the British Safety Council's health and safety management audit scheme, in the period August 2012 to July 2013.

The company also demonstrated to an adjudication panel, comprising health and safety and environmental management practitioners, a culture of best practice throughout the business – from the shop floor to the boardroom.

During the audit, the BSC evaluated Doosan sites at Renfrew, Hunterston B Power Station, Grangemouth INEOS, Gateshead, Eon Ratcliffe Power Station, Tipton, Czech Republic and Hong Kong.

"[This] is a great achievement for all of us at Doosan Babcock and our sister company Doosan Škoda Power, demonstrating to clients and staff that our approach to health and safety is truly world class," states Hopkins.

Lynda Armstrong OBE, chair of the trustees of the British Safety Council comments: "What all of the Sword-winning organisations share is a commitment and resolve to achieve the highest standards of health and safety and to keep their employees and those affected by their work activities healthy and safety. We wish the winning organisations continuing success."
