Deep groove bearings get eur100m performance improvement 24 May 2013

Deep groove ball bearings – the most common form of rolling bearings – from NSK are now available with improved reliability, thanks to a eur100 million investment in R&D.

The advance, which is claimed to work even in extreme environments, is due to new seal technology, better lubrication and greater operational efficiency through design.

NSK explains that it has worked with steel manufacturers to produce Z-Steel, which has such low levels of impurities that the bearing life can be increased by up to 80% compared with those manufactured from conventional steel choices.

As for the seal technology, a new patented labyrinth design is designed to ensure the best levels of protection while also minimising power loss – and NSK says there are now several seal and shield combinations to suit different applications, even those involving high temperatures or corrosive atmospheres.

Meanwhile, the lubrication advance comes in the form of high performance, environmentally-friendly lubricants, which range from clean-room greases to low-torque lubricants to minimise power losses, as well as its NSA lubricant, developed for use in air conditioner bearings to avoid vibration damage.

NSK currently offers more than 150,000 types of deep groove ball bearings, with bore diameters of less than 10mm up to those with outer diameters of 2,500mm.
