Bosch Rexroth wins Hannover’s Hermes award17 April 2013

Bosch Rexroth won this year's Hermes Award at last week's Hannover Fair (8—12 April) – the first time the internationally recognised accolade has gone to a software development.

The award was presented to Bosch Rexroth for its Open Core Engineering project, which essentially connects PLC (programmable logic controllers) with business IT and mobile and web systems.

Paul Streatfield, automation specialist at Bosch Rexroth, explained that Open Core Engineering improves flexibility and efficiency in automation, by enabling remote maintenance and operation of PLCs through smart devices and apps.

It combines advanced industrial algorithms with everyday hand-held devices, he says.

The Hermes Award was presented by Professor Johanna Wanka, federal minister of education and research in Germany.

"Bosch Rexroth prevailed against four other finalists and should feel confirmed [sic] in their response to the latest and probably most important industry topic of integrated industry," she said.

"Our software is the result of months of R&D that has led to a unique solution to remote access and operation of industrial machinery," enthused Streatfield.

"This award recognises not only our achievements, but the wider move within the industrial sector to embrace and benefit from latest technologies."
