BES Engineer Surveyor award goes to RSA’s James Merritt12 May 2014

The Bureau of Engineer Surveyors (BES) has named James Merritt as winner of its Engineer Surveyor Award 2014.

Merritt – a lift and crane engineer surveyor for RSA Engineering – was picked for his dedication to health and safety and to customer service.

He carries out inspections across Warwickshire and Birmingham, on equipment ranging from lifts, escalators, and vintage steam cranes, to telescopic handlers and forklift trucks.

Merritt (pictured) began his career in the cement industry with a mechanical craftsman apprenticeship. He achieved an HND in mechanical and production engineering, and later took on a plant reliability inspector role which ultimately inspired him to pursue Engineer Surveying as a career.

"In many ways, the Engineer Surveyor role is my ideal job and I love it," says Merritt. "It allows me to expand and develop my technical knowledge and personal skills on a daily basis."

He adds he is "beyond humbled" to win the award, which includes £500 cash and £500 worth of CPD.

BES chair Alan Fitzpatrick says Merritt goes beyond what is expected of an engineer surveyor and highlights his willingness to help others as an in-field trainer of other engineer surveyors. "He is an individual who clearly exceeds the expected role of an Engineer Surveyor and goes out of his way to help others succeed," says Fitzpatrick.

"The BES council, SAFed and the Engineer Surveyor section of Unite had no hesitation in naming James as the worthy winner of the BES Engineer Surveyor Award 2014."

BES is a professional sector of the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE).
