BBC Fake Britain boosts the campaign against counterfeit PPE08 June 2011

BSIF (the British Safety Industry Federation) is praising last week's showing of Fake Britain on BBC One, which included an investigation into the devastating impacts of counterfeit and illegal PPE (personal protective equipment).

On the programme, BSIF chief executive officer David Lummis discussed the different forms of counterfeit items and the problems they present for society.

Centurion Safety Products, with the help of BSI (British Standards Institute) testing laboratories, demonstrated the difference between a genuine and counterfeit safety helmet – with worrying results.

Lummis says it's a serious issue. "We are delighted that the issue of counterfeit and illegal PPE has been addressed on a national basis… Both our members and the federation are campaigning hard to raise awareness of the issue through our Registered Safety Supplier Scheme."

He explains that the scheme was created to help signpost purchasers of PPE to experienced and ethical firms that work to provide equipment that 'does what it says on the tin'.

By opting to purchase equipment from a registered safety supplier, he says that purchasers will be safe in the knowledge that they are buying genuine legal products from suppliers who can provide good advice.

BSIF introduced the Registered Safety Supplier Scheme in 2009.

The episode of BBC Fake Britain is available to view on BBC iplayer.
