Aero derivative gas turbine transforms power efficiency 01 November 2009

Cartiere del Garda paper mill and Italy's Alto Garda Servizi utility have commissioned a combined heat and power plant that marks a high point in mutually beneficial collaboration.

Paolo Mattei, president of Alta Garda Power, explains that the cooperative is using a GE 46MW aero derivative gas turbine to provide energy-efficient hot water district heating for Riva del Garda, while simultaneously generating steam for the paper mill.

Not only is the new plant heating around 4,500 homes but emissions are down 40,000 tons of CO2 equivalent annually – due to GE Energy's LM6000 PD Sprint turbine, which is certified at 50mg/Nm3 NOx and 30mg/Nm3 CO.

"It is worth highlighting that combustion performance," says Mattei. "Emissions are half those of the former [thermo-electric] Cartiere del Garda cogeneration plant and well below the European legal limit."

GE says its LM6000, which has a power output of 45.74MW and 41% efficiency (and is adapted from jet and turboshaft aero engines), is now running in around 800 plants around the world.
