Advanced light insulation for Gudrun offshore fire protection 20 December 2012

A new lightweight fire protection blanket material has been installed on the 40-cabin LQ (living quarters) module to be used in the development of Statoil's Gudrun field in Norway.

Dubbed FireMaster Marine Plus and developed by Morgan Thermal Ceramics, 10,000 m² of it has been used to provide A60 protection throughout the aluminium structure.

The specification means that the temperature of the decks and bulkheads will not rise above 140°C, even in a fire of nearly 1000°C – so ensuring that the aluminium stays robust.

According to Morgan Thermal Ceramics, the material installed on the Gudrun LQ module weighs just 3.5 kg/m²m – 25% lighter than similar flexible insulation systems and more than 50% lighter than mineral fibre fire.

The Statoil development uses a fixed platform installed in 109m of water and supported by a 7,100-metric ton jacket. First production is expected in 2014.
