Achilles gets government approval on CRC Energy Efficiency scheme08 June 2010

The UK Environment Agency has approved CEMARS (Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme), the certification standard for Achilles' carbon reduction programme, as a so-called early action metric for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.

The decision puts Achilles' industry-agnostic collaborative programme at the front of carbon measurement, management and reduction in the UK, since it is the only one that provides certification to ISO14064 Part 1, is government approved and recognised in major economies globally.

"This is a sensible decision that now offers companies affected by the CRC a choice of standard for achieving their early action metric [influencing their position in the league table performance]," says Lucy d'Arville, director of carbon reduction services at Achilless, which identifies, qualifies, monitors and evaluates suppliers on behalf of major organisations worldwide.

"The recognition reinforces the high standard of Achilles' carbon reduction programme and validates its choice of CEMARS as its certification standard, which is the world's first internationally accredited greenhouse gas certification schem," she adds.

CEMARS certification removes the cost of duplication for companies wanting ISO-certification, as well as regulatory compliance. By attaining CEMARS certification, plant operators will have verified information that can be submitted with confidence for their CRC reporting and, with no additional work or cost, have the opportunity to achieve the early action metric.

d'Arville insists that this could deliver significant financial benefits to successful oprators. Furthe, companies that operate globally can apply CEMARS to all their operations, fulfilling UK legislative requirements on carbon consumption while staying in line with emerging international standards.
