1,000th SKF magnetic bearing rolls into oil and gas 04 August 2014

Industrial bearings specialist SKF has commissioned its 1,000th SKF S2M active magnetic bearing (AMB) at a facility in the oil and gas sector.

According to the company, the frictionless, oil-free, low maintenance operation of these bearings results in high efficiency, long service life and low maintenance.

According to a spokesperson, the1,000th unit – on a large turbomachinery installation – features a more robust internal design aimed at improving resistance to harsh gas environments.

The magnetic bearing control system also has remote monitoring and diagnostics that measure critical parameters, such as rotation speed, vibrations and temperatures.

The control cabinet is an industry standard digital E 300V, 30A system, while the AMB controller has been customised to the machine's rotor dynamics.

SKF's spokesperson also says that as a result of their robustness, SKF S2M AMBs widen the operating range of machines – allowing rotation at higher speeds and the ability to withstand higher operating loads, so providing for operating flexibility.
