EDF selects UK supplier for West Burton combined cycle plant ducting08 April 2010

Specialised ductwork at EDF Energy's new high efficiency West Burton combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station, due to enter service in 2011, is being supplied by Senior Hargreaves, under a £2 million deal.

First ductwork shipments began last November and are due to complete this month on the plant, which involves a proven design and construction successfully used by EDF Energy at other European locations.

The order was placed via mechanical services engineers SPIE Matthew Hall, and the project includes supply and installation of pre-insulated process ductwork, HVAC ductwork, emergency smoke control and extract ductwork, and corrosion resistant (PVC) ducts.

Due to the high speed building programme, Hargreaves has been supplying equipment to a strict batch schedule, with ductwork pre-kitted for speedy site installation. Each colour-coded batch has also been supplied with identification documentation and packing lists.

Temperature resisting process ductwork is required for the main turbine halls – typically double-skin pre-insulated and designed for sustained exposure to high temperature exhaust gasses. Within the building envelope these will be protected by galvanising, while externally, a long life paint finish is to be applied.

Hargreaves HFD fire duct will also be used throughout the buildings to provide emergency smoke control. These heavily insulated ducts meet requirements for stability, integrity and insulation, and are designed and tested for two-hour fire resistance with internal temperatures to 400oC.

Other specialist materials on site include corrosion resistant PVC ductwork for battery and chemical rooms. Standard ductwork will be used elsewhere on the 12-building complex for general comfort ventilation and air-conditioning.
