Plant engineers push the importance of plant engineering 09 September 2010

SOE IPlantE (the Institution of Plant engineers) is launching a brochure extolling the virtues of plant engineering.

The leaflet explains what professional plant engineers and technicians do, the benefits of a career in plant engineering and where the IPlantE itself fits in.

Plant engineering, it says, is one of those key professions "that provide us with the standard of living to which we are accustomed".

The brochure's authors make the point that, in these times of ever-increasing environmental and competitive pressures, more than ever, we need all plant operating at peak efficiency.

Hence the importance today of plant engineering – particularly with IPlantE suggesting that the role includes: "specifying, designing, evaluating, acquisition, commissioning, operation, management, inspection, testing, maintenance, repair, refurbishment, development and disposal of machinery and equipment that is typically used in industrial, manufacturing, military and utility processes".

As for the IPlantE itself, the leaflet explains that it is a professional sector of the SOE (Society of Operations Engineers), and provides an independent professional body "for plant engineers and technicians who want to develop their skills, share best practice and demonstrate their professional competence in plant engineering to current or prospective employers, engineering service providers, plant and equipment owners, or the community at large".

Plant engineers at all levels are encouraged to join IPlantE, not only to enhance their career prospects, but also to demonstrate professional competence and gain access to the wider resources of the SOE.

Membership of IPlantE confers post nominal rights on the recipient to the tune of FIPlantE, MIPlantE or AMIPlantE, depending on grade, as well as registration with the Engineering Council to EngTech, IEng or CEng.
