Water treatment plant hire cuts costs for EPR 18 June 2010

Energy Power Resources (EPR) says it saved significant cost and time, when it needed more water treatment capacity at its Elean power station, simply by renting a mobile water treatment unit from Elga Process Water.

The renewable energy firm's 38MW Elean station, which is near Ely in Cambridgeshire, is the largest straw-burning unit in the world, but Bernel Alberga, operations team leader at the plant, explains that work on site means that its boiler has to be taken out of service and drained from time to time.

To minimise costly plant downtime the boiler must be refilled quickly, which means an additional supply of high specification treated make up water is required, he says. .

EPR intends to improve its current water treatment plant to cover this requirement but, to minimise operational risk, the company decided to use the MoFi rental service operated by Elga Process Water.

Alberga says that a skid-mounted mobile ion exchange plant capable of treating flows from 8 to 35 m3/hr and delivering treated water to 0.1 µS/cm was duly delivered.

"For us, this is an economical and convenient solution," comments Alberga. "We had excellent service from Elga, and the MoFi units proved both easy to handle and easy to connect with our boiler plant. The units are compact and cost effective, and they work efficiently and effectively. In addition, the rental charges are reasonable," he adds.
